It is the last day of August. The very last one.
Frankly, I’m pretty happy to see August go. There were exactly 10 days in August in which I didn’t have something outside of my standard schedule of work and barre classes. Just 10. August was fun, but August wore me out. I didn’t blog much in August because I simply didn’t have time.
Today, this last day of August, I’m working until 5, subbing for a barre class at 5:30, and going to a Junior League focus group at 7:00. The rest of this week? I have no post-work plans and I took Thursday and Friday off work, making for a five day weekend. It is going to be grand. September is going to be a lot more laid back.
The best part? Tennessee football kicks off on Saturday.
To end this long, busy month, I decided to share my 10 favorite posts. These posts aren’t necessarily the ones that got the most traffic or the most comments, but they are my personal favorite, for one reason or another. And so, in no particular order, here are my 10 favorite posts from the life of Back Home Blue.
Looking for Bravery – One of the reasons I love this post so much is because I got to use a favorite Faulkner quote in it. It is a quote from The Town, a Faulkner piece I still haven’t read. It also referenced a favorite article. I’m still looking for bravery. From myself and others.
My First Crush – Everyone remembers their first crush. Mine was in second grade and his name was Jonathan. Because of him, I decided to be a Dallas Cowboys fan for a year or so. Something that hasn’t changed? I’m still awkward around cute boys.
Where I Come From – I forgot all about this post until recently. The little mountain I grew up on is actually pretty famous. It will always be home, no matter where I grow up.
Accept The Invitation – I have gone back and read the last couple of chapters of Captivating a few times now, including just a couple of weeks ago. I think I will read them again this week. The message about facing your fears and accepting your invitation to the ball is a lesson we could probably all stand to review once in a while.
It’s Football Time in Tennessee – Football season is my favorite season. I love the game, but I also love the tradition. Tennessee football is just special. I tried to capture some of that in this post, but I think it is something you have to experience to really understand.
Something To Stand On – This is a recent post and is probably one of my very favorites. We all need something to stand on, something to believe in.
Passion – I believe in following your passion. I don’t believe in playing small, in settling. I wrote this post about that and people I have encountered that are living their passion. I still notice people who are living their passion. There is a different sort of light about them.
Knox Takes Over – The Dog Behind The Blog – Knox, my teacup Yorkie, has a lot of personality. What he lacks in physical size, he makes up for in gumption. He wrote a blog post and it was one of my favorites.
In Proportion to One’s Courage – It appears there is a theme here – yet another blog post having to do with taking a chance, saying yes to a risk, or just being brave. This one has a really great quote in it about how your life unfolds.
Be Kind – This post was in response to a tragedy. My stepdad’s nephew took his life as a result of bullying. He was different. But, so are you. And me. All of us our different. And that’s not a bad thing.
And as a bonus…. Two more of my favorite blog posts, because I just can’t seem to stop.
Sleepless In Seattle – I love this movie, and I love this blog post. I love to talk to people about whether they believe in things like fate, destiny, free will… This movie makes me think about serendipity and coincidences. I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe in “God winks.”
How I Survived A Summer on $1200 – That was a good summer. I learned a lot that summer. I would absolutely do it all again.
